I've never had extremely large ovarian cysts, but I can feel them about every 1-2 weeks before my period, and the pain is awful. It's like a sharp, stabbing pain (esp. in my left side) and then it just throbs, it almost never goes away. As for treatment, I try to walk and exercise (sounds dumb, but it helps me), and I use a heating pad and take Midol. My cycle has been really screwed up lately b/c I just got off of Yaz, so I'm waiting to see when it'll show up again. I didn't get a second opinion, b/c the doctor I have is one of the best in my area.
